With a name like Fluffernutter who doesn’t want to try this sandwich? This sandwich has thick Texas white bread smothered in peanut butter and a sticky coating of marshmallow fluff for extra goodness.
Fluffernutter
When I heard this name, I had to look up the origin of it. The term “fluffernutter” was apparently created by an advertising agency in 1960 as a more effective way to market this sandwich adding sweet, salty, and savory ingredients. It seems that both Massachusetts and New England claim the fluffernutter as their original creation to this day.
Types Of Filling To Use
There are a few options on the filling choices for the Fluffernutter sandwich. The marshmallow fluff is pretty standard, but you can change the peanut butter to crunchy if you prefer. Using almond butter is a great choice as well as any of the available nut butter in the local stores.
Options
- You can also add slices of fresh banana in between the peanut butter and the marshmallow fluff for extra goodness!
- Some prefer this sandwich hot by buttering the outside of the bread and frying it lightly in a pan till golden brown.
How To Make This Sandwich
This is a simple sandwich made quickly to go!
- Spread your peanut butter of choice onto one slice of bread. Spread the marshmallow cream onto the second slice of bread.
- Build the sandwich by putting together the two pieces of bread with the peanut butter and marshmallow cream facing each other to form the sandwich filling.
- Cut the sandwich using a serrated bread knife into halves. You can also eat it whole if desired.

What Type of Bread To Use?
In this instance, the choice of bread makes a huge difference in the final quality of your sandwich because the bread is really what determines what kind of sandwich you are going to eat.
Traditionally for this sandwich, thick white bread is used but whatever you choose will work fine as long as the choice is right for you. However, this is a treat sandwich and I’m not sure what whole wheat or whole grain bread would be like. You may as well use white bread and call it dessert!

I was born in Connecticut and this was a special treat that my mom would let us have occasionally. I now live in Alabama and my son and grandson still eat these (as do I). It always amazes me that the south hasn’t picked up on this delicious sweet and salty treat!

Yes, these WERE introduced in Massachusetts. When Marshmallow Fluff first came out, my mom would make Fluffernutters for my brother and me occasionally. There is nothing better than that peanut butter and sweet marshmallow taste! I moved to Alabama 40+ years ago and no one had ever heard of a fluffernutter! I have a grand son who will be 19 soon and I have made him a HUGE fan ! He still asks me to make him one at times! Thanks for bringing back a sweet memory!

I have been making them since I was a kid. I use white bread and toast it first, that way the peanut butter gets melty. I also use crunchy peanut butter for the texture.

crunchy peanut butter sounds like it would be great as well!

Seeing as I was born, raised, and still live in Massachusetts, I’m always surprised when I find out a lot of people have never had a PB & Fluff sandwich. It also comes in Strawberry flavored. As an adult, I have used fluff in a lot of different ways except in a sandwich. My favorite is in fudge!
At almost 51 to, I still have day’s where I want a fluffernutter sandwich. It’s nostalgic.

I did the fudge recipe as well, it will be coming up soon! I will look for the strawberry fluff next time I visit the states, that sounds delicious.!

I decided one nite to finish the 4 bread & butter pickle circles by putting them on my fluffernutter sandwich. Love it! Messy? Yes, a bit. But hey, that’s the fun of some things. All my ‘sweet’ cravings satisfied. I don’t like the dill pickles as much (other than long cut with sandwiches, but not here for me. But, I’m sure that would work to cut some of the sweetness. Just have to make sure to ‘dry’ putting the pickles on a towel to absorb some of the juice. The pickles themselves are juicy enough. Sounds strange: but it works. Try it sometime, you might surprise yourself. And, yeah, the banana works too.

I would definitely eat it with banana and I love pickles so I canāt see how that would be bad either!
