Texas sheet cake is a larger cake that is delightfully tender and bakes up quickly! It is topped with a decadent chocolate fudge icing that has a light crust keeping the cake moist for guests and has the added bonus that it gets better with time, making it the perfect make-ahead dessert.

Why I Think You’ll Love This Recipe

  • This recipe makes a large cake, making it great for gatherings – it feeds a crowd!
  • It’s even better made the night before – perfect for busy people who need to plan ahead for an event or get together.
  • This cake is so easy to make, my daughter made the cake pictured here all by herself.

Decadent Texas Sheet Cake

Texas sheet cake is made in a larger size so that it can feed a group of people. It is easily sliced smaller for more people as this cake holds together well. It is the perfect dessert for all your upcoming summer BBQs and family gatherings ready to feed a crowd!

Don’t Skip the Cinnamon

The hint of cinnamon in this cake makes this a classic Texas sheet cake when compared to a plain chocolate sheet cake. It gives it a unique flavor that is perfect when paired with the crackly fudge frosting.

Types of Frosting to Use

This is the best part of a cake in my opinion. You can choose to make it double fudge for the classic Texas sheet cake with this Chocolate Fudge Frosting. If you want to change it up use my Coffee Buttercream Icing! Or my classic Cream Cheese Icing making every bite like a little bit of cheesecake to delight your tastebuds!

How to Make This Cake

This cake has a few steps to make, but it is worth it! Make sure to check out the entire recipe card for the in-depth steps to make this, this is just a summary.

  1. Prepare the cake batter, then pour into a prepared 9×13 or sheet cake pan.
  2. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 22-25 minutes.
  3. Remove and let cool slightly, then prepare frostings and spread over the cake.

How to Store Leftovers

This decadent cake will probably not have much for leftovers, but if you do have some here are a few tips. Keep this on the counter, not in the fridge because it will harden and not have the best texture. Put it in an airtight container to keep this cake moist and tender, and it will keep well for about 3-4 days on the counter.

Texas Sheet Cake is a perfect family cake for birthdays or summer barbeques and will surely be a new favorite.

Happy Baking

Love,

Karlynn

Course: Dessert

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 large eggs

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 6 Tablespoons whole milk
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9×13 pan, or a 15x10x2 inch sheet cake pan. Set aside.
  • Place the butter, water, and cocoa into a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring, then remove from the heat. Let this mixture cool slightly while you prepare the next steps.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon and salt.
  • In a large liquid measuring cup, whisk together the buttermilk, baking soda, vanilla, and eggs. Beat until well blended. Pour into the flour mixture and combine thoroughly.
  • Pour the hot butter mixture from the pot into the large bowl, mixing into the batter completely.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading evenly.
  • Bake for 22 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The 9×13 pan will take slightly longer to bake.
  • Remove the cake from the oven. Keep it warm so don't chill it.
  • Prepare the icing. In a medium saucepan, heat the butter, cocoa, and milk until the mixture boils. Remove from the heat. Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla with a whisk until the icing is smooth.
  • Pour the frosting over the warm cake. BRIEFLY place the cake into the fridge, to let the icing set and the cake cool completely. Remove it as soon as the icing is solid and slice to serve.

Notes

  • The hint of cinnamon in this is what makes this a Texas sheet cake more than a plain sheet cake in my opinion. It gives it a unique flavor that when paired with the frosting is exactly perfect.

Although you’ve advised not to skip the cinnamon, it is not included in either the list of ingredients or the instructions…
