Nothing is easier to top your cake with than this fudge frosting that hardens into a crackled fudge and will melt in your mouth. This is the classic frosting for a chocolate Texas sheet cake.

This is my second favorite next to my famous Chocolate Buttercream Frosting but this frosting will have a lightly dry crackly coating on top.

Chocolate Fudge Frosting

This chocolate fudge frosting is my go-to for a quick topping when I have little time. It takes less than 5 minutes to make and a few minutes to cool in the fridge when needed. This chocolate frosting is easily poured onto a sheet cake for a family birthday or scooped onto individual cupcakes.

For this frosting, you can also use Dutch-processed unsweetened cocoa, which will give this frosting a deeper chocolate flavor. Dutch-processed cocoa is washed with an alkaline solution that neutralizes cocoa’s acidity and makes it a bit darker in color and a little less acidic tasting when used in recipes.

Change Up the Flavor

Try using a different extract other than vanilla and you’ll have a new frosting. Try mint, raspberry, or orange extract – all of which pair deliciously with chocolate!

How to Make This Frosting

This is as easy as it comes, done in four easy steps this frosting is ready in a jiffy!

  • Heat – The butter, cocoa, and milk until the mixture boils.
  • Mix – Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla with a whisk until the icing is smooth.
  • Pour the frosting over the warm cake/cupcakes.
  • Rest – Let the icing set and the cake cool completely before slicing.

How to Store Leftovers

While this Chocolate fudge icing itself cannot easily be stored in a bowl for later, it can be used on cakes and then stored. This is in essence a fudge recipe, so it hardens and is not usable as a spreadable frosting anymore. It has to be used on the baked goods right away. If it is used on a sheet cake or cupcakes they should be kept at room temperature and stored in an airtight container, or they will dry out and the icing will become brittle.

With birthday parties and family BBQ’s, a chocolate cake or cupcakes with frosting will always delight the kids and adults alike!

Happy baking and enjoy!

Love,

Karlynn
