Stanley Cup Skillet Brownies with M&M candies

My newest creation, the Stanley Cup Skillet Brownie.  AKA in this household as The Recipe That Never Made It.

Or should I say the hockey team that never made it?

Ouch. Sorry, Edmonton Oilers.

I had grand plans for this skillet brownie.

I was – as usual- perusing the Easter section of candy in Superstore a while ago when I spotted this adorable Stanley Cup chocolate. My heartbeat sped up, my mind started working so fast you’d swear you smelled the smoke in the middle of that candy aisle.

I knew exactly what I was going to do with it.

And do with it I did, however it also was going to take a hockey team to make this dream dessert come true.

Was it too much to ask the Oilers to just make it to the blinking playoffs already?

Apparently it was.

This is how food bloggers sometimes work. We see something that can be completely out of season, out of celebration context and start thinking months ahead of time. We can’t always think  “in season” and in that way we resemble the fashion industry. By the time we write a recipe, create new dishes, we actually already had it planned out weeks – or months- ago. Sometimes the recipes are even completed fully ahead of time and just wait for the right time to publish. An example of this is Christmas baking, I do it in November and publish it starting in December for your reading enjoyment. If I had to write in season constantly, I wouldn’t have a spare moment to actually enjoy any holidays!

I digress.

This was in fact planned for Stanley Cup playoff season.

Edmonton has no reason to rejoice.

Pah. What game?

However, it still is a fabulous looking dessert and what a waste to not publish it.

The Stanley Cup is made by Hershey’s chocolate for Easter and they have signed a three-year deal with the NHL. This – one would assume- means that we can hope that this chocolate cup is going to come back next year and be ready for us to stock up on in preparation for an Oiler’s playoff.

Now, you can get all creative with your hockey teams colors on any skillet brownie, in the theme of the playoffs which is why I am posting this for everyone to see. Use my Best Brownies Ever Recipe (check below as well for the recipe) and then gently place candies of your teams colors on top.

So the Oiler’s didn’t make the playoffs but maybe your team did! Have fun decorating, use your imagination! I’d love to see any creations made from this idea, send them my way!

Stanley Cup Skillet Brownie

Ingredients 

  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup M & M Candies in your hockey team colours to decorate the top

Instructions

  • Kick the tires and light the fires to 325 degrees.
  • Melt the butter in a pot, remove from the heat and stir in the white sugar.
  • Once that is combined, mix in your cocoa.
  • Add in your eggs and mix it very well.
  • Let the mixture cool a bit so that the chips won’t entirely melt when you put them in. 
  • Once it’s all done, add in your flour and barely stir it in. Just barely. Do not ruin these by over mixing them! 
  • IF you are using the Stanley cup, place in the middle of the skillet. 
  • Pour the brownie batter into a 10 or 12 inch skillet, spreading it out evenly. IF you are using the cup, you will not use all the batter! Do not fill it more than halfway up the side of the cup. Depending on skillet size, you might have leftover batter. 
  • Place – do not push in- the candies on top of the batter in the pattern of your choice. 
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes until the brownies pull away from the side and are set in the middle.
