Scooby the rabbit really doesn’t have much to do with the blueberries, but she was running fun and fancy free in the yard the whole day while we worked outside, and thus there is a picture of her, of course. Being bad and eating my plants, of course.
My blueberries did not produce this year, and it could be for a number of reasons. Blueberries are notoriously picky and hard to grow, they love acidic soil, and wet, boggy feet. Anything other than that, and they will leaf, but not bloom to produce those berries we so wanted this year. Another suspicion I had is our late frost; in the last picture you can barely tell, but there was a very tall offshoot that was new growth this spring, and the late frost that decimated my garden also killed the new shoots on my blueberries.
Whether or not it was the frost, I decided to dig around and make the soil even more boggy and acidic this fall, with hopefully better results. They did produce the first year they were in, so I know they can do it! Fickle little buggers.
So I spent a morning digging out around the roots…
Then put in a ton of peat moss…..
Followed by my slave labor son helping me put in pine mulch to aid with the acidity of the soil.
We put in almost half a large bag of pine mulch in with the peat moss, and now both plants are surrounded by a lot of boggy acidic mulch.
The dirt around them was looking mighty spectacular, but it’s not dirt they love so much as boggy peat. Of course I left in there but now its mixed in with more peat moss and mulch.
The rose bush is doing just fine, so I just added mulch around it. Here’s hoping it worked, and I will have some blueberries next year.
