This is a flavour packed hearty chili that’s very easy to put together, what more could you want in a busy home?! Even if you’re not a fan of turkey, you’ll probably still love it! Why? Well, the turkey is honestly almost undetectable (and I’ve done the taste test with my total turkey phobic kids!). There’s hardly any prep work involved in making this protein-packed meal and it’s definitely worth having in your cooking repertoire.
This is also a really economical dish because it freezes so well! A massive batch will last you forever so its a really cost effective and tasty dinner to have on hand as needed!
How To Cook Ground Turkey Chili
Slow cooker instructions
- Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place the ground turkey and chopped onions in the skillet. Fry until the onions are softened and the turkey is cooked, drain if needed. Add in the garlic and fry for 2 minutes until browned and fragrant.
- Spray the inside of your slow cooker with cooking spray (the turkey isn’t greasy so it can stick more) and place the in the ground turkey mixture, tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, mushrooms, ketchup and spices..
- Cover the slow cooker, and cook 8 hours on Low or 4 hours on High. Season with salt and pepper at the end if needed.
Stove top instructions
- Heat the oil in a larger sized stock pot over medium heat. Place the ground turkey and chopped onions in the pot. Fry until the onions are softened and the turkey is cooked, drain if needed. Add in the garlic and fry for 2 minutes until browned and fragrant.
- Mix in the tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, mushrooms, ketchup, and spices. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 60 minutes on the stove top, or until the beans have softened to your liking. Season with salt and pepper at the end if needed.
How healthy is Ground Turkey Chili?
The ground turkey, beans, and veggies make this a super nutritious meal and it definitely packs a great protein punch! Using turkey instead of beef really helps to trim down the calories in this dish, most of which come from the saturated fat in the beef. This meal will keep you full for hours without making you feel like you’re bursting at the seams (I hate that feeling!) and it’ll stop the kids from looking for treats within 10 minutes of eating it (hopefully!).
To rinse or not to rinse, that is the question.
If you’re wondering whether you need to rinse your ground turkey during prep, the answer is no. Food experts advise against washing raw meat or poultry before cooking because the bacteria are loosely attached to these foods and could end up spreading around your kitchen causing cross-contamination! Some people still prefer to give their ground turkey a rinse, but just bear in mind that it’s not recommended!
Try adding sweet potatoes to mix it up!
Sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest foods around and packed full of Vitamin A and C. If you’re looking for a bit of variation, try adding some to your ground turkey chili after your onions and turkey. Sweet potatoes are just one variation though – there really is no limit to what you can mix and match with this yummy dish. Try changing up the beans you’re using if you fancy something new, or add in some extra veg! You can never go wrong with extra veg!
Got some ground turkey left over? Don’t let it go to waste.
Ground turkey can be used in so many dishes it’s unreal! If you have some leftover and don’t fancy making another chili recipe just yet, why not make a lasagna, taco salad, rigatoni bake, or sloppy joes with the rest! As for the ground turkey chili leftovers, they last for ages by just sticking them in the freezer. So it’s definitely worthwhile making enough for 2 or 3 batches in advance!

Love this! I always have trouble with ground turkey (I think it tastes so flavorless) but I’m going to work on a new way of seasoning it and then try this recipe, because I love chili and I want to make it again before it gets too warm!
Thanks for this! I look forward to trying it.
