Classic Homemade Garlic Bread
It’s hard to believe that a recipe with such basic ingredients could be packed full of such amazing flavor, but you won’t doubt it for long once you try this homemade garlic bread. You really can’t go wrong with fresh bread in any instance though, can you? Comfort food doesn’t get much better!
How To Make Homemade Garlic Bread
You can make crispy or soft edge garlic bread, it all depends on your preference. When it comes down to the garlic, you can use fresh or powdered. Fresh has a sharper garlic taste to it that not everyone prefers, so choose accordingly!
Prefer crispy edges? This is the method for you.
- Preheat your oven to 400 F.
- Combine the butter, dried parsley, and butter in a small bowl.
- Coat the cut sides of the French loaf using a pastry brush and then place on a baking sheet.
- Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes and check the top of the bread every few minutes throughout.
- Once the top of the slices have nicely browned you can take it out of the oven.
- Let it cool a bit, then slice, and serve!
Is softer garlic bread more your thing?
- Preheat your oven to 400 F.
- Combine the butter, dried parsley, and butter in a small bowl.
- Coat the cut sides of the French loaf with a pastry brush and place the two pieces together, butter side in. Then wrap in tinfoil and place on a baking sheet.
- Bake in preheated oven for around 15 minutes and have a peek into the tinfoil to check it’s hot and steamy. If it’s good to go, remove it from the oven and serve!
Tips And Tricks For Making Garlic Bread
- Depending on how much you like garlic you can adjust the amount you use. If you’re not too keen on it, you can use a bit less or even use some garlic powder instead to make it a little milder.
- Try to get fresh bread baked the same day for ultimate flavor.
- Make sure to keep an eye on the bread as it bakes as it can burn very fast!
- Toss in some Parmesan for a cheesy variation that’s absolutely delicious for dunking in my classic beef & tomato macaroni soup
- Want a vegan version? Just use vegan butter instead!

What to do with leftovers
Ha, there are never any leftovers in my house with two teenagers (one that is a 6 foot 2 boy that eats like a horse!) but if you do have some, here’s how to deal!
To freeze, just wrap the bread in foil and plastic wrap. When ready to serve, let it naturally thaw or bake in the oven at 300 F (remove the plastic wrap first!) until it warms up and the butter melts.
Reheat the garlic bread slices later by wrapping the garlic bread in foil and placing in the oven at 350 F for about 15 min until heated up. Don’t heat it in the microwave though, it’ll get all hard and chewy when it cools down!
Happy cooking!
Love,
Karlynn
Classic Homemade Garlic Bread
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French Bread sliced in half as shown
- 1/2 cup salted butter melted
- 2-3 tablespoon minced garlic or sprinkle on powdered garlic instead
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
Instructions
Crispy Edges Garlic Bread Method
- Preheat your oven to 400 °F.
- In a small bowl, combine the butter, the garlic and the dried parsley.
- Taking a pastry brush, coat the cut sides of the French loaf and then place on a large baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, checking the top of the bread every few minutes. When the top of the slices are browned nicely, remove from the oven.
- Slice once cool enough to touch.
- Serve immediately.
Softer Garlic Bread Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400 °F.
- In a small bowl, combine the butter, the garlic and the dried parsley.
- Taking a pastry brush, coat the cut sides of the French loaf. Place the two piece together, butter side in, then wrap in tinfoil, and then place on a large baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes to heat the bread. Once hot and steamy (check by carefully peeking into the tinfoil wrapped bread) remove from the oven.
Notes
- The key for softer garlic bread is wrapping it in tinfoil. The other way gives you nice crispy, buttery edges and is my favorite!

Your recipe for garlic bread does not say where the garlic goes? Do you mix it in the butter with the parsley then spread it on the bread. How much garlic should one use?
Nancy Henry says
Hi Karlynn, love your recipes! In your recent garlic bread posting, #2 lists butter twice and omits garlic…just so you can correct. Looks scrumptious! Nancy

Are you slicing the bread first? Before baking?
