The Scofflaw is a delicious whiskey cocktail that has been around for a very long time. It was originally created in Paris in the 20’s and is still being made by bartenders today.
How to Make a Scofflaw Cocktail
To make a Scofflaw, you’ll need lemon juice, grenadine, whiskey (such as Canadian Club, which I used here), dry vermouth and orange bitters. Once you’ve got your ingredients together, add them to a shaker with ice and shake until cold to the touch. Pour into a nice cocktail glass or tumbler such as the vintage one of mine shown here. Garnish with a stemmed maraschino cherry and serve. If you like drinks with grenadine, I recommend trying the Dirty Shirley cocktail as well.
What does Scofflaw mean?
Originally, Scofflaw was a name given to “lawless drinkers” after being coined in a contest in the 1920’s. The term was intended to shame those who ignored Prohibition laws. Since then, it has expanded in meaning and now refers to anyone who breaks any law.. but personally I think lawless drinkers is much better.
Pair this with some canapes and you have a perfect party set up!
