It’s a cocktail with one of the more unique names, the Rusty Nail. This Drambuie-based cocktail combines a Scotch-based liqueur with average Scotch whisky for a delicious cocktail experience.
If you like Scotch-based liqueurs, be sure to try the Penicillin as well.
Why is it called a Rusty Nail?
Nobody knows why the drink is named as it is. Some say that when it was first created, it was stirred with a rusty nail, but I find that rather hard to believe. I think it’s more likely that someone was just trying to come up with a unique name, and it certainly is that!
How do you make a Rusty Nail?
To make a Rusty Nail, you need equal parts Drambuie and Scotch Whisky. Combine the two in a shaker with ice and shake until cold. Then, pour them over a large ice cube and serve. Given the use of only two basic ingredients, it’s a very easy cocktail to make.

- 2 ounces Drambuie
- 2 ounces Scotch whisky
Instructions

A rusty nail is such a refined cocktail. No syrupy mixers or juices. Some may consider it a sacrilege, but a good single malt makes for a sublime drink. One uses the best ingredients in cooking and the same should be true for cocktails, in my mind. I’ve never tried it with an Islay malt (don’t care for them) but a rusty nail with an 18 or 21 y.o. Speyside is blasta.
