Origins of the Hanky Panky Cocktail

The Hanky Panky, as mentioned, originates from as far back as 1903 when it was first created by Ada Coleman, a bartender at Savoy Hotel in London. She came up with the idea for the cocktail after experimenting with some ideas for a cocktail for actor Sir Charles Hawtrey.

How to Make a Hanky Panky

The cocktail is very easy to make and does not require anything other than a glass of your choice (I use a coupe as pictured, since it fits nicely) is:

  1. Gin
  2. Sweet Vermouth
  3. Fernet Branca

Directions

Pour each of the ingredients into the coupe and give it a stir with a bar spoon. Garnish with an orange twist and serve. If you prefer your drinks cold, frost the glass in the freezer for a few minutes before mixing the drink to give it a chill.

If you enjoy small sipping drinks like this, you should try my Espresso Martini as well. It’s a simple but delicious pick me up cocktail that is great before heading out for the evening to a party (just make sure you take a cab or Uber!).

The Glassware

The glassware used here is from my vintage barware collection and is Queen Anne’s Lusterware. They come in quite a few styles including whiskey glasses, brandy glasses, wine glasses and even roly-polys! If you like them, you can often find them in thrift (or second hand) stores or antique malls.

Hope you enjoy this tasty little cocktail!

Drink safely,

Mike.
