Air Fryer Kale Chips are fast, crispy, and so easy to make! They are a terrific way to use up any kale you have in the fridge that you ignored making it into a kale salad or a kale smoothie. (or is it just me that does that?)
\It’s amazing how useful an Air Fryer can be, isn’t it? You can make air fryer eggs, air fryer grilled cheese and all kinds of other recipes but did you know you can also make Air Fryer Kale Chips? Not only are they a great, crunchy alternative to potato chips but they are also a super healthy snack that my son loves!
Air Fryer Kale Chips Recipe
I actually didn’t make this recipe myself as my son loves things like kale and seaweed and was super excited to try making his own kale chips in the air fryer, so we did the recipe together. They turned out great and he was snacking away on his crispy kale chips while playing on his XBox in no time. The trick to making these crispy and delicious is a light drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt massaged into the kale before you add it to the air fryer basket. How to Make Kale Chips in the Air Fryer
To begin, wash the kale by rinsing under the tap. Shake the water off of the kale as much as possible.
Next, you’ll need some fresh kale which you’ll place on a cutting board and remove the stems as shown in the picture below.
Now tear the kale into bite-sized pieces and place in a salad spinner. If you don’t have one, blot it dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture. This helps ensure crispiness to the kale when cooked. Place the kale in a large bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Then sprinkle with a bit of salt. Massage the kale thoroughly (but lightly) to ensure full coverage over the leaves then place in the basket of the air fryer as shown below.
Cook the kale, open the air fryer, shake the basket and then continue cooking until done. For times and temperatures, see the printable recipe card below.
Remove and either eat as is or toss with your favorite seasoning (see recipe card for suggestions).
Questions and Answers
How do you store the kale chips?
Place the kale chips in an airtight resealable bag to ensure the longest lifespan. Ideally, eat them within a day or two otherwise they may start to lose some of their crunchiness.
Can I make these in the oven?
Yes you can but cooking times and temperatures may vary. See our post: How to make Kale Chips for details instructions on how to do them in the oven.
What seasonings can I use on the kale chips?
We recommend trying our taco seasoning, Cajun seasoning, chili seasoning or Italian seasoning.
I hope you enjoy these as a good healthy alternative to chips and pretzels (not that there’s anything wrong with those!). My son is a huge fan and plans to make more when he runs out so hopefully you find them as delicious as he does.

Air Fryer Kale Chips
Ingredients
- 1 large bunch of fresh kale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- sprinkle of sea salt
Seasoning Suggestions
Instructions
- Wash the kale by rinsing under the tap. Shake the water off of the kale as much as possible.
- On a cutting board, remove the stems of the kale as shown in the photo.
- Tear the kale into bite-sized pieces then place in a salad spinner.
- Spin the kale until the water has been removed.
- IF you don’t have a spinner, blot the kale with paper towels as much as possible to remove the moisture.
- Place into a large bowl and drizzle the olive oil over the kale. Sprinkle with salt.
- Massage the kale lightly to ensure that the oil and the salt cover all of the leaves.
- Place the kale into the basket of your air fryer. It should be around 5-6 cups of kale.
- Cook at 365 °F (you don’t need to preheat your fryer) for 2 minutes, then shake. Check again at 4 minutes to see if it’s done.
- Continue to cook to desired doneness, checking every minute to ensure that it doesn’t burn. I like a few browned bits of kale in mine, my son thinks those are burnt, while I think that they are the best part!
- Remove and place in a bowl. If desired, toss with a couple of teaspoons of your favorite seasoning.
