Love pork? Why not make some Instant Pot Pork Chops using this Pork Broth?
Pork Broth
Making any kind of broth at home is typically seen as a pretty arduous task – cooking and straining meat, bones, and veggies for hours on end to try to create something you can just as easily buy at the store. It seems strange, right?
However, just like with many things, making this pork broth at home is infinitely better tasting than anything else you could get at the store. Plus, you can season it how you like and end up with something that is so good, you’ll want to sip it like tea.
Roasting the Pork Hocks
This recipe doesn’t use smoked pork hocks, but the plain ones that are cut up into pieces and sold in packages at the grocery store in the meat section. They need to be roasted for maximum flavor.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the pork hocks, onion, carrots, celery and garlic in a single layer. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Roast for 40 minutes, then remove. Place all of the ingredients into a large bowl and then start making the broth.

• Add 10 cups of water to an Instant Pot
• Add all of the ingredients and, using the Soup button, cook on high pressure for 1 hour
• Let the Instant Pot release naturally for about 30 minutes
• Strain out all bones and vegetables and season to taste
How To Make Pork Broth in the Slow Cooker
• Add 10 cups of water and the ginger to a slow cooker
• Add all of the ingredients and place the lid on top. Cook overnight on low for 10-12 hours.
• Strain out all bones and vegetables and season to taste
How To Get a Hold Of A Pork Hock Easily
A pork hock, also known as a ham hock or a hough, is the knuckle joint between the bones of the pig’s arm and is basically just a very large, chunky, and fatty cut of pork. The Germans boil it slowly and then brown it really quickly under a gas broiler to end up with a deliciously fatty cut of pig.
However, trying to get a hold of unsmoked pork hock for this recipe might be pretty tricky for most people, especially those in North America.
The trick is to get to know your local butcher, especially if they advertise themselves as being an “organic” or “farm to table” butcher.
While they might not actually stock a pork hock themselves, if you are at least a little bit friendly with them, they will probably know where to point you to find one for sale somewhere. Plus, getting to know a butcher is always a good idea, as it means plenty of good advice regarding meat!
How To Use This Pork Broth
This pork broth is an incredibly simple recipe to make using a usually pretty undesirable cut of pork. It should taste rich, meaty, and almost like the way pork smells, and it can be used in pretty much any savory recipe you can imagine.
Use it in place of chicken stock in literally any recipe for when you want a bit more of a pronounced pork flavor, or use it as the base for a simple vegetable soup, instantly making it a pork vegetable soup!
Another great use is just to turn it into a delicious sipping snack, like a cuppa soup! Simply heat it up, either on the burner or in a cup in the microwave, and season it a bit with some more salt.
Consider it as a refreshing bit of savory soup – it won’t really contain many calories, but it should brighten your day and leave you feeling refreshed; that’s just the power of pork broth.
