Seasoned salt gives you all the saltiness you desire on a meal, but also a ton of really intense, varied flavor as well and is one of my favorite spice mixes to use on air fryer French fries!

You can also use seasoned salt to make some homemade Dill Dip, or American Chop Suey!

Homemade Seasoned Salt

Seasoned salt doesn’t just come in a dull red shaker bottle – you can just make it yourself! Though commercial seasoned salt mixes are really convenient, they are way better when made at home because you can tailor the ingredients to your personal taste.

The critical thing is to make sure that you keep it away from the air to avoid it oxidizing or clumping up.

Use this homemade seasoned salt on basically everything, from meat and fish to potatoes and veggies. Probably avoid putting it on desserts, though a savory apple pie isn’t the worst idea ever…

How To Vary The Taste Of Your Seasoned Salt

The joy of any seasoning mix you make from scratch is that you can vary its flavor combinations however you like.

While most commercial options have a pretty set in stone flavor profile, you have the liberty to change it as you see fit.

This recipe is a great basic, mainstay seasoned salt that will pretty closely mimic most seasoned salts you’d find at the grocery store, but you can use it as a base to work from.

If you like more of a garlic forward note, why not add in more garlic, or even different types of dried garlic, like black garlic?

For something spicier, why not include dried chili flakes of your favorite chili, like chipotle or habanero?

To figure out what kind of thing you would like, try and make this basic seasoned salt first, and then see what you wish you had put into it in the first place. Then, the next time you make it, you can remember what you wished you had done and add it in, making your own unique blend of seasoned salt that you came up with yourself!

How To Store Your Seasoned Salt

The most significant benefit of buying pre-made seasoning mixes is that they tend to come with good quality seals and the ability to close them to the air.

This same logic needs to be applied to the seasoned salt that you make at home – keep it away from humidity, warmth, or even the sun if you can, as all of it will degrade the flavor of your blended spices.

Try and keep it in an old seasoning jar or a mason jar with a tightly fitting lid. In fact, if you happen to have one of those pre-made seasoning mixes that is nearing the end of its life, why not dump it out and put your far better seasoning mix inside of it instead?

If you find that your seasoning salt has a tendency to clump up on you, consider an age-old trick – just a little bit of cornstarch. Not much at all; something like a quarter of a teaspoon will likely do it. It will just act as a way to help divide the clumps of seasoning and stop them from sticking together too much.

Am wondering about the seasoning salt recipe….is red pepper like cayenne pepper or? Thanks

I was wondering the same thing….thanks for asking….we will be enlightened soon

    • Karlynn Johnston says

Hey! Cayenne pepper is hotter than crushed red pepper, red pepper is a mixture of 3-4 different chiles, so it’s a different flavor profile. You can get flakes or crushed! It’s a generic mix in almost all grocery stores!
