How To Control The Sweetness For This Recipe
A lot of times, cake breads that you find in stores are far too sweet – sugar makes up for the lack of flavor in them, in my opinion. One of the nice things about making your own spiced applesauce bread at home is that you can control the sweetness with just a few easy steps.
There are two main components in your applesauce bread that determine the final level of sweetness is the applesauce and the sugar. Altering one or both of these ingredients allows you to control how sweet your bread turns out.
For less sweet bread, try using unsweetened applesauce as this still provides the same fruity tang only without such an intense level of sweetness. The nice thing about making this alteration is that the ratios in the recipe do not need to be adjusted, ensuring you are still able to achieve the same delicate texture.
Alternatively, you can play around with using different types of sugar in order to create a sweeter bread.
Low Sugar Option
For a lower calorie/sugar option, you can swap the sugar in the recipe for an alternative sweetener, like stevia that has a 1:1 ratio when used in baking. Artificial sweeteners are often designed to be sweeter than sugar, meaning that you can increase the sweetness without having to worry about packing in too many extra calories.
Alternative Toppings For Your Applesauce Bread
While a cinnamon nut topping really completes this recipe, it can be fun to play around with different toppings creating an entirely new flavor combination with just a few steps.
One option that works with almost all cake breads is a vanilla glaze adding an extra layer of sweetness while not detracting from the cake’s base flavor profile. One of the great things about sugar glazes is that they are quick to make and only require a few ingredients that you are sure to have on hand in your kitchen.
Another fun option that works super well when serving this cake to guests is to decorate each slice with a few pieces of apple. This can be as simple as thinly slicing an apple and delicately placing it on top. Alternatively, if you have a little more time, you can heat your apple slices and season them with the same warming spices that go into the cake recipe.

Can you make muffins from this recipe?
Laurel says
I’m making this now. I cut the sugars in half snd substituted ¼ c of bran for ¼ c of flour.
I’m assuming the crumble topping gets sprinkled on top of the batter before baking because it’s left out of the steps.
It sounds great, but I’ll let you know how it turns out!
Laurel says
It turned out okay. I would say either bran substitute OR ½ the sugar, but not both. Also, inverting the loaf onto the cooling rack will lose about a third of the topping.
Nora says
I agree with Ana Maria – not only do the instructions not say anything about adding the topping before baking but there is no cinnamon listed in the ingredients for the “cinnamon nut topping”!
Laurel says
Thanks for reminding me…cinnamon!
Ana Maria Rios says
This recipe is not complete. The intructions do not say to put the nut topping before baking!
