Cheesy Onion Bread
There is nothing quite like homemade bread straight out of the oven. Even the best store-bought bread lacks that warm, comforting taste and texture that homemade bread has.
Finding the time to make your own bread and perfect your recipe is not something that most people can fit into their busy schedules. Making bread is something that is usually reserved for the weekend and holidays at best.
However, making your own bread does not have to be that difficult or time-consuming. This Cheesy Onion Bread recipe is yeast-free and can be put together in almost no time at all while still satisfying your desire for freshly cooked bread.

What Cheeses Could You Use Instead?
Grated white cheddar is delicious and will create a very traditional cheesy bread making it the perfect comfort food.
If, however, you are planning on serving your cheesy onion bread with a specific dish, why not try pairing the cheeses that you use with the rest of your meal.
Monterey jack cheese is an excellent alternative, especially if you are planning to serve your bread at a BBQ or alongside a meaty stew. Gruyere cheese is another option that will work with this recipe and pairs best with creamy soups.
Hard cheeses work best in this recipe as they ensure that the overall texture of the bread stays the same. You could try using slightly softer cheeses such as goat or brie, although this will result in wetter batter and potentially a more gooey bread.
Could You Use Yeast In This Recipe Instead?
This recipe uses baking powder instead of yeast to achieve the necessary rise to make it flavorful and tender.
This is necessary because if you tried to use yeast instead, you would probably find that the bread would really struggle to rise, or it might even start to taste pretty weird as well.
This is because this bread recipe has so many different ingredients, like onions and loads of milk and butter, that the yeast might not have a very good time trying to eat the sugars in the flour to create the necessary lift.
If you happened to be able to get your hands on some really strong yeast, like, for example, from a super healthy yeast starter, you could definitely give it a try. Keep in mind that the yeast will try and ferment some of the sugars in the cheese, meaning that the whole bread will definitely taste very different from the original recipe.
For a more dependable, reliable cheesy onion bread, stick to using baking powder, but if you want to try something new out, feel free to give the yeast a try as well.

Delish recipe, this was loved by my family! Question, I followed the recipe to a T, but the bread didn’t rise as high as your pictures. Any ideas why it didn’t? Please don’t tell me living in Edmonton is the reason lol!

Hi. Just LOVE your recipes, what a fantastic cook you are, I get so many ideas from you. This onion cheese bread sounds and looks wonderful and I am anxious to try it. I have just a few questions, does it have to be whole milk or can I use my skim? And I don’t buy salted butter, watching sodium intake, so can I use my sweet butter? Other than that I will have everything with the exception I have just regular cheddar not white and I know that would work. When the snow lets up I am heading to the store to get the green onions. My hubby will love this bread. Thank you so much for all you do for us. Big hugs. Claudia

Yep, both should work fine! Thank you for the kind words. I’ll pass them along to Karlynn!

This looks like a bread that a relative used to make, she took the recipe to the grave unfortunately. I am thinking of trying this with a mild Parmesan Cheese instead of the cheddar. Any thoughts?

There was a cook book series called ‘Company’s Coming’, and one of the little books had a really great cheese bread, you could either make the cheese or a cinnamon loaf; the loaves were nice and high as they called for at least 3 cups of flour. The booklets were kept in a special binder. Hope that helps 🙂
