What Is The Difference Between Linguine & Fettuccine?

Second, to the sauce, the pasta is the star of this recipe. It is the pasta that provides most of the mouthfeel and texture. The pasta is the delivery system for the sauce. Use the wrong pasta, and the full creaminess of the sauce can easily get lost. Use the right pasta, and you have a dish worthy of a dinner party.

So what exactly is the right pasta to highlight the sauce’s richness?

Some people like to use penne and other similar pasta shapes as they provide gaps for the sauce to get caught in. However, long ribbon pasta is the most traditional with Alfredo dishes, and for a good reason. The ribbon shape allows for the perfect sauce to pasta ratio with each bite.

Linguine and fettuccine are the two most commonly used pasta shapes with this recipe. Both shapes have the traditional long ribbon shape but provide a very different mouthfeel.

Fettuccine has a  flat thick shape. Traditionally made with egg rather than water, fettuccine has a satisfying bite to it. There is enough surface area for the sauce to stick to the pasta while still allowing the taste of the actual pasta to shine through.

On the other hand, Linguine is elliptical in shape and is a lot thinner. The word Linguine means ‘little tongues’ in Italian and perfectly describes how this pasta’s shape collects a small amount of sauce with each fork twirl.

Both fettuccine and Linguine work great with Alfredo sauces but in different ways. Fettuccine is best when you want a more robust bite and want the pasta to stand out on its own. In contrast, Linguine makes the dish more about the sauce and acts mainly as a delivery system.

What To Serve With Linguine Alfredo

For a super simple dish, this Linguine Alfredo recipe works great on its own. For those nights when you have a little extra time, though, why not try adding a few extras to the dish before serving it.

There is an almost endless list of ways to enhance this creamy pasta dish. Topping each plate with roasted garlic, sautéed mushrooms, or fresh herbs, add very little cooking time and turn a basic weeknight dish into something that has been crafted with care and love.

Alternatively, you can add proteins to the dish, such as chicken breasts or salmon fillets. Not only are these additions a great way to get a little extra protein in your diet, but they also make the dish a lot more filling.

For a low-carb alternative, you could also try serving the sauce without pasta and instead of pouring it over a panfried chicken breast or other healthy meats.
