Baked Apples

Apples aren’t just the perfect snack fruit – they can also be used to make delicious desserts like apple crumble and apple pie.

Something a bit more simple, yet equally delicious, is to use the apples themselves as the container for all of the other ingredients and make some tasty baked apples!

With a healthy pouring of salted caramel sauce and lots of sugar and oats, this is basically a mini apple crumble with the texture of soft, gently cooked apples.

What Kind Of Apples Should You Use For This Recipe?

While most people might be more familiar with just the regular kind of eating apples that people pick up in the supermarket for eating with lunch, there are actually all kinds of different apples out there to enjoy.

If you want to enjoy these baked apples, you sadly cannot just use regular eating apples, especially the particularly sweet kinds, because these will actually cause some pretty significant problems when they bake.

The extra sugar content and the texture of the sweeter apples will almost disintegrate when they bake, making a huge mess and leaking out all of the ingredients.

Instead, you should try to choose one of the more tart varieties typically used for cooking. Something like a granny smith would be perfect – you wouldn’t want to bite into it as a regular eating apple, but they will hold up a lot better to cooking, as well as helping to provide a bit more of an acidic contrast for all of the sweet ingredients in the apples.

How To Prevent The Top From Browning Too Quickly

Making baked apples isn’t just about ensuring that you pick the right apples and manage to get all of your ingredients inside the apple. You also need to be carefully monitoring the cooking of the apples to make sure that they don’t cook too quickly.

You want the interior to get warm and the sugar and butter to melt together and coat the inside, but you also want the exterior not to get too hot or even start to burn.

Having a good, low oven definitely helps with this, but one of the best things you can do is to coat your baked apples with a little tent of foil if you need to.

The foil will not only protect the outside of the apples and help stop them from burning, but it will also help keep moisture inside the foil tent, ensuring the interior filling of the apples stays nice and moist and cooks just a little bit faster.

You can also simply cover the baked apples with foil as soon as they come out of the oven if you want the interiors to cook a little bit longer. Just giving them a bit more time in the hot steam within the foil can help ensure the insides are properly hot without overcooking the outside.

These sound good but because I’m keto now and not eating most carbs, I rarely eat apples. I used to make them using a banana in place of the sugar and they were wonderfully sweet and delicious when the banana got soft. I’d use 1/2 – 1 whole banana/apple depending on the size of the banana.4 stars
