Buffalo wings might be everyone’s favorite, but there is a whole world out there of different chicken flavors that you absolutely need to try, like these Honey BBQ wings.

However, you don’t just have to get them from your favorite pub and pay extortionate prices – you can make them all on your own!

Though it requires a bit of deep frying, it is surprisingly easy to end up with crispy, tangy, and perfectly cooked wings every single time, and a whole lot cheaper too!

What Kind Of Barbecue Sauce Should You Use For This Recipe?

Despite the fact that most recipes call for simple “barbecue sauce,” there are actually countless types and variations of barbecue sauce, with varying availability depending on where you live.

While most people tend to make their barbecue sauces primarily tomato based, if you lived in the Carolinas, for example, your barbecue sauce might be mayonnaise or mustard based!

For this recipe, the best kind of barbecue sauce is definitely the more classic variety; this means it should have a tomato-forward sweetness, and it should be rich and brown.

This kind works best because all of the sugar will caramelize and crisp up, making a tangy, sweet, and sticky glaze that clings to the chicken wings and tastes amazing.

The exact brand, though, is totally up to you – use whichever brand you best enjoy, so long as it is a fairly typical type with plenty of tomatoes, sugar, and meaty flavor.

How To Avoid Burning Your Wings Or Your Seasoning In The Hot Oil

Making fried chicken wings at home is surprisingly simple and usually tastes way better than it seems like it should, given how little effort it takes.

However, there is always one ever-present risk: burning your wings and seasonings in the hot oil.

While a lot of recipes tell you that it couldn’t be easier, and you just need to keep cooking them until they turn completely golden brown, and you’re done, there is actually a pretty significant risk of accidentally burning your wings.

This usually happens because the heat is set way too hot, causing the oil to scorch and burn the outer layer of your wings before the interior meat can properly cook.

You also need to consider that one of the things that makes chicken wings super tender and delicious is the fact that they have a lot of collagen and connective tissue inside them. To make them tender and delicate, the chicken wings need to be cooked at a relatively lower temperature than you might first expect.

So to avoid burning your wings and ensure they become super tasty, make sure to keep the oil temperature consistent at 375 Fahrenheit and that it doesn’t start to creep up and burn your wings.

How To Get The Wings Completely Covered In Sauce

The final critical step in making some delicious chicken wings at home is trying to get your sauce and seasonings to completely and totally coat your crispy wings.

It is a surprisingly careful and delicate balance – on the one hand, you want to keep your wings as crispy as possible, but on the other hand, you desperately want to make sure the sauce coats every inch of your chicken wings. 

The trick is that you need to be overly aggressive when mixing your sauce and your wings together.

Use a really big, wide, and deep bowl, and pour all of your sauce into the bottom of it.

Add your cooked wings on top, and shake everything really hard, back and forth. You want to mix everything up so that as much sauce as possible clings to the wings in a nice, even layer.

As long as you shake it really good, your sauce should coat everything perfectly.

Ingredients 

  • 2 pounds chicken wings wing tips removed

Honey BBQ Sauce

  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Flour Coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • Oil for deep-fat frying

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, barbecue sauce and honey. Bring to a boil; cook until the sauce has thickened. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, paprika and pepper. Add the wings, a few at a time, and toss to coat.
  • In a deep heavy bottomed skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 375°.
  • Fry the wings, a few at a time not crowding them in the pan, until they are golden brown, no longer pink inside and cooked completely, about 4-5 minutes on each side. (the time needed to cook depends on the size of the wings of course)
  • Remove the wings from the oil with tongs and place the wings on paper towels to drain. Transfer the still hot wings to a large bowl; add the sauce and toss to coat the wings completely.
  • Serve hot.

    Could these be baked instead of deep fried, and if so temperature and approximate time.

      You can, just bake at 425, then when they are almost done add the sauce and bake until done. You don’t want the sauce to burn, so add it in later!
