Are you a fan of beef stew? It’s one of my daughter’s favorite things to eat for dinner so coming up with a delicious homemade stew seasoning to use was a goal of mine. With this newly created beef stew seasoning, I no longer have to use store-bought packages, and neither do you!

I recommend using this in my crock pot beef stew recipe or a good ol’ Dutch oven beef stew.

Why I Think You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Beef Stew packets from the store can get expensive as one batch of stew often requires more than one packet. This way, you will always have some on hand; if you don’t, you can make it instantly!
  • Nothing beats homemade – nothing. There are no weird ingredients or preservatives, just normal seasonings.

Beef Stew Seasoning

The bonus to beef stew is that it’s relatively inexpensive to make. Stewing meat often goes on sale at the local grocery store, or, if you prefer, you can easily use any inexpensive chuck or blade beef roast to make your stewing meat.

Karlynn’s Tip

To use this beef stew seasoning instead of a store-bought packet, simply shake the jar to combine the ingredients again and use two heaping tablespoons to season your stew. If you are making a larger stew, use three tablespoons or more.

Preparing the Beef Stew Seasoning

To prepare this, you’ll need to gather together several ingredients. Here is a list of what you will need.

  1. Dry Ingredients: Flour, Onion Powder, Paprika, Dried Parsley, Salt, Black Pepper, Granulated Garlic, Celery Seed, Basil, Rosemary and Oregano.
  2. Combine everything in a bowl and store in an airtight container.

Storing your Homemade Seasonings

It is always much more convenient to make a giant batch of your favorite seasoning blends and store them ready for when you need them than to make them fresh every single time.

When stored correctly, homemade seasoning blends can last up to six months. You should store your beef stew seasoning in an airtight container. You could use a small plastic freezer container, as this should always be airtight. You could also buy glass jars designed for seasonings, although these can be expensive.

An excellent way to reduce waste and save money is to keep the jars your store-bought seasonings come in. Just make sure that you wash and dry them thoroughly beforehand.

Don’t Store in Direct Sunlight

Make sure your seasonings are not kept in direct sunlight. You generally want to keep them somewhere dry and out of direct light, such as in a cupboard. This helps the flavor in your spices last longer.

Sounds good but I’m gluten free so what do I substitute for the flour? Love your recipes.

I don’t use gluten-free products, so whatever flour or thickener you use in your own baking etc. would work!

  2. Janet Bower says

How long can this beef stew seasoning be stored and best place

    • Karlynn Johnston says

Spices and mixes can last a solid 6 months in the closed jar if kept in the cupboard!

  3. Elisabeth says

Great seasoning recipe. Used the seasoning for a Dutch Oven beef Stew. Added some additional vegetables including peas like rutabagas, green beans etc. it is a perfect basic seasoning blend to give a rich flavor to the meat and vegetables and can easily adapt a little heat etc if you prefer toward the end.5 stars

    • Lynne says

Sounds good except that I’m extremely allergic to onion & garlic so I can’t use those ingredients. Any ideas of what I could use instead?5 stars
