Simple Minecraft Birthday Party Collage

Ah, the Minecraft birthday party. What every little boy or girl is wanting this year, mine included.  When presented with the idea of a Minecraft birthday party I was a little overwhelmed, truth be told, since I don’t pay attention to the games that Mr K plays, that job falls upon his Dad. Being the brilliant tech-minded guy that he is, Mike vetoes every game or website that the kids play and when I looked at Minecraft I was a little unimpressed, to say the least. I don’t really “get it”.

While the appeal of the game may escape me, the building aspect enthralled my little engineer-to-be boy. This kid thrives on science, math and building, to the point where I’m incredibly glad that we ended up choosing an arts core school for the kids. He’s so intently focused on the sciences that he needs the balance that arts programming gives him.

So a Minecraft birthday party it was for my little boy who was turning 9.

I really wanted to keep it simple because simple birthday parties are my true love. Simple allows you to do a few things, really well. That’s my kinda style.

The first thing was making Creeper  pins for our treat bags. While you might immediately think “Are you crazy? That’s too much work!“,  let me change your mind about it.

Minecraft inspired creeper pins with

If you have one of these cuties below, you have someone to make your Creeper pins.

The design is incredibly easy, you can follow what you see above. My son was able to figure it out all on his own and complete 10 pins for his friends over 2 days.

young boy working on creeper pins

Michaels sells bags of individual colors of the Perler beads, so you buy one black, one green and you are set. The pin backs are glued on with Gorilla glue and the clips can be found at Michaels as well.

things needed in making creepers pin

The treats for the goodie bags were incredibly easy thanks to my friendly neighborhood Bulk Barn.

There are Wiki’s of all the food in Minecraft and with their help I managed to figure out that there are “fish” and “melons” that Bulk Barn almost regularly carries. I also came across the chocolate rocks and was so darn excited.

Most of what they do in Minecraft is mine ore, rocks, minerals and more. So to find rocks and minerals in a chocolate form for the treat bags was the ultimate!

Speaking of treat bags, these beauties were a piece of cake! Simply buy green treat bags (Michaels as well) and cut out black construction paper to make Creepers. This took all of 10 minutes.

Now on to the main event! Cupcakes!

Wow. Do I ever feel like I phoned these in.

So unbelievable easy to make they shouldn’t look this good.

All you need to do is bake up the cupcakes, ice them with my buttercream icing then use Wilton black gel to draw on creeper faces.

Whip up a batch of my Best Buttercream Icing Ever and then simply ice up some plain cupcakes for the adults or kids to enjoy.

I also made snacks that matched the theme, all of them easy.

Helloooo 5 minutes of work that equalled a lot of squeals of delight from little Minecraft crazy kids.

Square sandwiches. You get where I am going with this? Everything in Minecraft is square. Serve square food.

Slice cheese into cubes.

Slice up watermelon into cubes.

Slice…anything you want into cubes.

Oh so easy.

That my friends, covers it. No muss, no fuss, simply a great Minecraft party that had just the right amount of themed items that impressed the kids yet won’t stress you out while making it.

The kids played Minecraft on our Xbox taking turns, came down to eat, played Minecraft some more, opened presents, ate cupcakes and left.It was simply one of the best parties I’ve done yet. Fun, exciting and easy to do.

Hope this gives everyone some ideas!

Love,

Love those Creeper Pins and the Jello. Though, if I tried to make jello square they wouldn’t look that uniform.

I love this!  My soon to be 8 year old son and I are excited to put your ideas to use!  I was not finding much ready made stuff out there and was dreading having to do it all myself.  This is a happy medium with WAY less stress.  It makes me feel like I can pull off being creative mom! Thanks!

Thank you so much for the ideas!  My almost 10-yr-old daughter loves Minecraft and is insisting on a Minecraft party.  Since her birthday is only 3 days after Christmas, it really HAS to be simple and easy.  These ideas were exactly what I needed.  Because the girls love crafts, I’m letting them make the pins as part of the party.  To make it a little more girly, I also went to Hobby Lobby and got paper mache boxes, with lids that come off, and they will paint them.  (This is a slumber party, so I needed several activities.)  They will also make square pot holders on the looms I have.  I really appreciate your suggestion to just make everything square!  We went to the store and got lots of square treats:  Cheese-Its, Snickers Bites, Chex Mix, etc.  Thanks again for all the great ideas!

  12. mkwendy1 says

I have to add to some of the ideas you have above.  My son will be 9 in March 2014, so we did a Minecraft birthday for his 8th Birthday in March 2013 and I had NO idea what to do.  I was so, so overwhelmed until I just thought of things to do.  I to did goodie bags and bought the green ones from Michael’s but I just used a big black permanent marker and made the face (first did what looks like a computer desk with a laptop on it and then on each upper left and right corner of the laptop, drew squares….so simple and my son helped me!) but I learned soon that you should put something under the bag b/c the black can transfer.  I also bought gummy fish, sharks even, watermelons, etc.  We used a Davanni’s room which they allow to use for free (I’m in MN so I don’t know if these are elsewhere but it’s a pizza place) and the room held up to 80 so it was nice and big.  I had the pizza’s cut into squares but I provided a few other food ideas that helped fill their tummies and Minecrafty or not, Dorito’s always go over big!  But I went to a Dollar store and got 2 big white cardstock (like 3×3 or so) and also had a paint stirrer…you’ll see where I’m going w/ this.  I was creating one of the games the kids could play and it went over BIG!  I drew w/ a pencil on the white cardstock, Steve’s body w/o his head.  So at the top I started w/ his shirt and just made the t-shirt he wears and then his pants, brown shoes, arms, just exactly what he looks like but this was by no means “perfect” but the kids sure thought it was.  We used colored crayons, me and my b-day boy, to color the shirt, the pants, shoes and arms of course we used the skin tone colored crayon.  Then on another cut out piece of cardstock we made Steve’s square head.  This took more attention from me but it wasn’t that hard at all.  We taped Steve’s head to a paint stick and at the party I had all the kids line up and we put a blindfold on them, twirled them around and they had to walk w/ no help (unless they were going to fall over a chair or something) to as close to Steve as they could.  I didn’t account for how keen they’d get by listening and watching to the other kids and I didn’t have enough presents to give so I made it a bit harder with turning them and purposely turned them and stopped each of them in a different way/direction so the next kid didn’t know and I also would turn one way and then back another way.  They all hooted and hollored but the one thing that they couldn’t do or they’d be disqualified is say if the direction the kid w/ the blindfold on, was either too left or right or whatever and they all just were excited and saying “you can do it!”  I also bought big containers of Fruit Punch that was green and I took off the label and put on a green piece of paper w/ a creeper face on it, which again I did w/ the marker.  I bought black table cloths at the dollar store, green cup and those blue round glass beads to be spread over the table.  I had 1 cake that was green frosting and chocolate inside and simply bought a sheet of black paper that goes on top of the cake and I cut it into the creepers face and put it on there.  I also did some cupcakes on the side for those who didn’t want green tongues.  In the goodies bags I really did whatever but for the prizes I tried to keep it things that were minecraft related and the best gift was the small bags of “gold rock” gum that I found for sale at Mine Craft.  On a laptop we played the song, ”Baby Tonight” for the kids to dance around to and then we played a game where I took all kinds of MineCraft words and scrambled them up and they had to descramble them.  I think I found some of those online but I think I ended up doing my own b/c there were spelling errors all over the one from the net.  Then I did a “how well do you know the birthday boy” sheet.  It was about my kid and these are his friends and school peers so I thought it should be somewhat about him, so I worked on about 10 things about him that he thought were good ?’s as well, to ask the kids.  I had a big roll of tickets and I pre-assigned how many tickets each person got for winning each game.  One mistake was not planning this part better but w/o planning I did this: if they got 100% of the questions/word scramble right, they got 5 tickets, 75% right, 4 tickets, 50% - 3 and 25% - 2 and for “effort” they got 1 ticket (saves you from all the ones who got 1 right saying “but I got……”.  I did the same for the “Pin the Head on Steve”; If they got it right on the spot, they got 3 tickets, anywhere on his body, 2 and for effort 1 (off the body or not even close).  I had the help of a few adults, since we had over 22 kids there and only thing I’d change is to have a limit b/c even with 6 adults there was a lot of energy in this room b/c Minecraft made them crazy happy!  We helped count their tickets and the one w/ the most got first in line and if too many had the same amount of tickets, I had to (last minute since I didn’t plan for this) have them “guess a number” to see who goes to the line first and next and so on.  I bought all kinds of things from the dollar store and I had them all placed on the table and it’s crazy, I bought a pack of 10 plastic dinosaurs and kids were turning in 5 tickets for 1 dinosaur, had some of the bags of gold gum in a bag, a few bottles of bubbles, cars, little games, all kinds of stuff you could find at the Dollar Store, these kids were just excited to be able to redeem tickets for prizes and it was much like a Chuck E. Cheese experience but the prizes were easy and inexpensive.  You can do the ticket/prize table if you want to or do something else but those kids thought this party was “the bomb” and after all the effort, you do go home w/ a big smile knowing that all those kids think you are amazing.  We then went to a park, indoor park b/c of weather in MN, and they burned off their energy there.  I got a good price for all the kids and again, this wasn’t necessary and I didn’t really think until afterward that the kids were really tired and could go home but they ran like crazy and it wasn’t at my house thank goodness and I know many parents loved the fact that I gave them worn out, falling asleep children.  I also want to note, I had a sheet for each kid who was there in a folder and I had the parent(s) address, phone numbers, emergency contacts, allergies, anything that the parent thought I could run into, etc.  We did the transport of the children to the next place and this added to the kids feeling older, important, made them bond more but it’s up to you how you do it all.  Also, make sure to have lots of older kids and adults to help b/c to tear down the room and go onto the park place took time and effort and you can easily pay the older kids (like the ones who can drive but still attend b/c it’s their nephew or brother. etc) a few bucks to help tear down and clean up.  How I did it may sound hard but except for not thinking through the ticket part well enough and also having a 2nd place we were going to (which isn’t really necessary OR you can maybe handle the whole thing at your house, my house is very small), it has been the BEST child’s party I think I have ever attended.  Kids were extremely happy and thought it was the best ever too.  Not a party you would do every year though, use it for a special party.  My son’s dad (and my husband) had died when he was going on 4 so he didn’t get much for a 4th birthday party and getting 4 years beyond that, I chose his 8th to be the one I wanted to be big.  Hope some of this helps.  If anyone really wants to see the Steve I made, I did keep him so maybe I can take a pic if someone wants to see it.  W
